Padi kolams are usually drawn using parallel lines which cross over diagonally or at right angles. They may start from a dot or a square and form basic structures such as square, triangle, circle, swasthik or a crossed diagonal. A padi kolam can be enlarged by adding parallel lines joining the preceding ones. Padi kolams are usually decorated by drawing lotuses and artistic motives around the pattern. The centre of a padi kolam is always filled with small designs like a sun, moon or a star. These patterns are more of an abstract nature.
